Essential Oils-Yes or No?

Essential oils are everywhere right now. Are they a trend or something here to stat? I attended a party a few years ago, was totally skeptical and didn’t buy a thing. Eventually, I did buy a diffuser and some peppermint oil. I would turn it on every now and then, but that was about all I did with it for a year or so. Fast forward and now I’m using oils for all kinds of things. We have diffusers all over the house and I’m learning more all the time. My hubby calls my “voodoo witch craft”. He clearly is not on board.

I’m no expert, by any means but here are a few things I use my oils for regularly.

-I diffuse to make the house smell better. I like oils better than candles now and rarely buy them (candles) any more. Oils are cleaner. You don’t have to wonder about the chemicals burning from the candle. My favorite to just diffuse is peppermint and lemon. Sometimes I add in another citrus for fun.

-I diffuse a “cleaning” oil to get rid of smells in the house. I love frying bacon for my family on Sunday mornings, but I hate the way the house smells all day after. This oil helps get rid of it faster.

-I diffuse to lift or change the kids, mine, or my husbands mood. Citrus/peppermint to wake us up and get us alert. Lavender to calm the boys down at the end of the day.

– I swear by peppermint and eucalyptus by the boys bed if they are sick. This will stop their coughing 90% of the time and I don’t have to give them cough syrup. It also helps with a stuffy nose.

-I make my own cleaning solutions. I use recipes from one of my favorite bloggers and authors, A Bowl Full of Lemons. One of my favorites is so easy. I put baking soda in a mason jar with a few drops of peppermint oil. Stir it up and punch wholes in the top and you have the best carpet/rug freshener without chemicals.

-I put a few drops of lavender in a bath with epsom salt and baking soda for a relaxing bath that helps pull out toxins from your body.

-I diffuse an oil called “good sleep” in the boys rooms at night to help them relax and fall asleep.

I really want to learn more about using oils topically. You can roll them in for stress, alertness, and relaxation. You can use them for skin care. Oh, and PS, if you have a headache, diffuse peppermint oil and it will totally feel better. I’ve also yet to find a brand that I’m completely loyal too. I use a little bit of this and that. I’ve been researching Young Living and like the company, but haven’t pulled the trigger yet. Are any of you into oils? Do you have a brand you love? Or, are you like my husband and think it’s a bunch of craziness?? (I promise you won’t hurt my feelings.) : )

Getting Back on the Wagon!

I must confess, I had fallen off the health bandwagon for four or five days, but today I jumped back on! I had a big test to take this past Friday and I am not a good test taker. They make me SO nervous!! Like, so nervous, that I would sit down to study, open the book, stare at the first page for about 20-30 minutes and then get heart palpitations and close the book. I did this for several weeks before the test and then had to cram weeks of studying into one day. Because of my anxiety and procrastination, it is likely that I will be taking this test again, but I won’t know for a few weeks.

So, what does any of this have to do with my personal health challenge? Well, I was doing good, staying away from sweets and fried food, and exercising daily and then last week happened. Wednesday night I didn’t exercise because I was going to “study”. Thursday was cram session day, Friday was test day, and then the weekend hit. You get the picture. This is what happens to me every time I get in a good groove with being healthier. Life sidetracks me. It tosses me a curve ball and most of the time, I just give up for a few weeks, undo all my progress and have to start all over again, but not this time!  It’s important to not let life sidetrack you if you are on a similar journey. I refused to let it get me down.  Sunday afternoon, I re-stocked the fridge with fruits for protein shakes, veggies, Greek yogurt, chicken, and fish. I also decided I am going to kick the exercise up a notch this week and do a few morning sessions with Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred along with my nightly walk/jog and exercises from my Facebook page that I check in with daily. (Thanks, Darla!!) I’m also tossing around the idea of signing myself up for the Charleston Bridge Run in the spring. I think having a goal to work towards, that’s not weight motivated, helps me. I did this several years ago after I had my second little monkey and was so proud of myself for accomplishing it (especially, since I was pregnant with my third little monkey by race time).  Exercise is key, people!! I already feel stronger after just a few weeks of consistently exercising.

Also, I am starting my third week on Plexus. I chose to do the triplex, which helps cleanse your gut of bad yeast called candida. It is a probiotic, a cleanse pill and the Slim “pink drink”. I did have a tough time the first two weeks with bad headaches and stomach cramping. All of which is natural when you start a cleanse for candida. That bad yeast does not want to give up possession of your gut! Towards the end of last week, the symptoms started to go away and now I am not experiencing any of those symptoms. So, if you are out there struggling to get into a healthy groove, just do it! Don’t let setbacks, sideline you. (I’m giving this pep talk to myself along with hopefully encouraging someone else out there!)  Even if all you do is start walking for 20 minutes, a few times a week or drink an extra glass of water or two, any little accomplishment, is still an accomplishment!! Little changes can lead to big changes!

Operation Get Healthy- Week 1 Run Down

I started off this past Monday on an operation to get fit and healthy. I’m just so tired all the time and I have no energy. I know it’s because of my terrible eating habits and lack of exercise. I have 3 little monkeys to take care of (4 if you count the hubby), a full time job, and college courses to get through, so having no energy just isn’t cutting it for me.

I started the week off strong doing PiYo Monday AM and walking in the PM. The PiYo (hard core on the floor-yep!) really aggravated my bowling injury. And by bowling injury, I mean the bruise on my hip and sore shoulder that I lodged into my lungs when I fell at the bowling alley on Father’s Day. Graceful, I am not!! So, I had to take it easy the rest of the week. I scaled back to walking in the afternoons and doing ab exercises and lunges. After another visit to the chiropractor, my shoulder is much better and I can do push ups again without wanting to cry.

I did ok with my eating, too. Stayed away from Little Debbie cakes and pop tarts- now that’s progress! I had a protein shake every morning and grilled chicken and veggies for lunch. Dinner was whatever we were all having, but I made sure it wasn’t too bad or that I didn’t completely hog out. I even had a salad when we went out with friends Friday night and did not order the chocolate cake that LOVE to get at the club. I do feel better already and I slept good this week. I am also less bloated. I did not weigh or check my measurements because I am trying to focus on my overall health, not my waistline.

Goals for this week- I hope to keep making progress and stay away from sweets and Diet Coke. I started Plexus yesterday so I am waiting to see how that works out.  I am also checking in with a friends facebook page where she gives encouragement and daily exercises. (If you would like to know more about that, let me know. She is a great motivator!)  It helps to have some accountability. Let’s hope I can keep it up! Feel free to share some tips or tricks you all use to stay motivated.

Slap Me, Please!

Those are the words I told my co-workers last week. “Next week, If you see me with M&M’s, donuts, or anything that is bad for me, slap it right out of my hands.”  Like some of you, I struggle with eating health and exercising.  Oh, I give it a good try, succeed for a few weeks and then give up.  I get sidetracked by a crazy week, a sick child, a trip out-of-town, or just anything out of my normal routine.  Then I am right back to where I started. So, since I am procrastinating my homework this weekend and starting a blog, I thought the first think I should put out there is this plan.  For the next six weeks, I will eat healthy and exercise.  Why six weeks, you ask?  Well, because I am pretty sure that I read somewhere that it takes 6-8 weeks to form a habit. (Or I completely just made that up.)  And, that is also when the circus and I are headed on vacation.

The plan is to exercise five days a week by walking/jogging, 21 day fix dvd or Piyo dvd.  PS-If you need to borrow an exercise dvd, odds are, I own it, so just ask. : )  I will eat by using the 80/20 rule, cutting out most sugar and bad carbs. For those of you that may not know, the 80/20 rule is a great one to try and live by.  You eat clean and healthy for about 80% of the time and cut yourself some slack for about 20% of the time.  I am NOT a cook, so I will mostly be asking my sweet husband to grill some lean meat for dinner and I’ll be stocking up on some fresh summer veggies.  If you know of any tasty and easy recipes, let me know. I’d love to try them.  My end goal is to tone, slim the baby belly pooch, and feel just better.  I don’t know about you all, but I am sick and tired of being tired, having no energy, being moody, and fighting my dull, broken out skin. I know all of these issues are caused by my eating habits and it’s up to me to change it. So, here goes nothing!

One more thing, I have ordered Plexus and will be adding it when it arrives. I know, I know, EVERYONE is selling Plexus these days.  Let me be the first to say that I’m skeptical, but I am giving it a try and will let you know about my results.  I hope some of you will follow along on this journey with me and help hold me accountable. Lord knows I need it!!
